Relay for Life of the Woodburn Area's June 30 event will include a scavenger hunt

Over 60 local businesses have signed up so far to sponsor the Woodburn Relay for Life Scavenger "Hunt for the Cure" scheduled for June 30.

Although the local Relay event has raised over $1.1 million in 17 years, this year the committee has opted to instead stage an all-day scavenger hunt to locations in the Woodburn area.

"Our sponsors will be the primary destinations for the scavenger hunt," co-chair Rhonda Judson said, "so in addition to supporting a worthy cause they will be marketing their business to scores of potential customers visiting their location." To gain points the scavenger hunt participants will take a picture at the business, and post them on Instagram and Facebook, providing additional social media coverage for the sponsors. Bill Szabo of Bill's Bits-n-Bytes Computer Repair, who is once again the sponsor chair, said he has received a warm reception when explaining the new advantages of sponsorship.

"Legacy Health is providing their facility both for our monthly meetings and the all day and evening location for activities," said Judson, "and Do It Best Corp will be our largest overall contributor after their annual Parking Lot Sale on June 2."

Local area restaurants are providing a sample of their excellent cuisine at the "Taste of Relay" from 5 to 7 p.m. the day of the hunt. Sponsors of this portion so far are Chu's Eatery, Don Pan Bakery, El Agave Grill, Loco Ono, Orchard's Grill at OGA Golf Course, Panera Bread and Sin-able Sweets. Beginning at 7 p.m., the event will honor cancer survivors and caregivers, distribute awards to participants, host a speaker, conduct the honorary "first lap" for survivors, and conclude with the moving luminaria ceremony around 8:30 p.m.
