Local resident publishes inspirational book
Longtime Woodburn resident and retired minister Ewart Brown has already been a published author, but his new book, released last month, is the first to come through a publisher and to be available at major retailers nationwide.
"A Candy a Day Keeps the Doctor Away" is a motivational work by Brown to encourage positive interactions. Each chapter is a short story from Brown's own life experiences (and one that was borrowed from a friend), prefaced with a short proverb of sorts to get the reader thinking.
When explaining the title, Brown quoted Proverbs 17:22, which says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine."
"'A candy a day' does suggest something nice, something sweet; the book is about nice deeds, nice people, sweet deeds, sweet people. It is absolutely true that sweet people do make a difference," Brown said about the title.
Brown is also the author of "A Quiet Place," a devotional about his personal spiritual journey, and "Love Me with Tenderness" a counseling book about how Christians deal with other Christians. Unlike his first two books, and despite the biblical reference regarding the title, this book is not specifically for the Christian reader, Brown said.
"In my estimation, it's for everyone who breathes who wants to make the world a better place," he said. "It wasn't written for Christians or non-Christians; it was written for civilization. It was designed that way. I am not hesitant to say that I'm a religious person. But I take into account that someone reading it might not be a Christian but (is someone) who desires to do good and be nice."
Among the nearly 100 experiences shared are stories and inspirational anecdotes. Many of the stories are from simple experiences in the garden or at the grocery store.
"It's all about connecting with people," Brown said. "I have discovered all across the globe that people are hurting. … Every connection that is made is an opening. It makes a difference. Just be nice."
Brown has so much to share that he said he is already working on part two of this book.
