When police officer saw meth pipe in car, Gervais man allegedly resisted arrest and fled on foot

Update: Police have provided a description of Juan Riestra Cruz. He is 5-foot-8 and weighs 180 pounds.

A Gervais man is still on the loose after fleeing on foot during an encounter with police Tuesday night at the French Prairie Rest Area near Aurora.

Around 8:30 p.m., an Oregon State Police officer encountered a man cleaning out his black Honda Civic in the back parking lot of the Interstate 5 northbound rest area north of Aurora.

While talking with the man, the officer reportedly saw a meth pipe in the vehicle, and attempted to take the man into custody.

The man, identified as Juan Alberto Riestra Cruz, 41, of Gervais, resisted, despite the officer's use of several apprehension options.

Riestra Cruz reportedly escaped and fled on foot.

Police established a perimeter and a K-9 track was conducted but Riestra Cruz was not located.

A search of the vehicle revealed meth and fraudulent identification documents and other documents possibly identifying the male as Riestra Cruz.

If arrested, Riestra Cruz could face charges of possession of methamphetamine, resisting arrest and third-degree escape.

Anyone who sees Riestra Cruz can call *OSP (*-6-7-7), or call 911 if it's an emergency.
