Nearly 200 people help raise $16,000 to benefit the Gervais High School greenhouse

Now in its eighth year, the auction acts as the program's primary fundraiser each year, and organizers came close to meeting their goal of $20,000, netting $16,000 at the February event to help support the horticultural side of farming.

After spending the past two year focusing on constructing a livestock barn in the fields south of Gervais High School, organizers of this year's auction came up with the theme "Grow Our Greenhouse," with the idea of putting all their efforts into giving the school's nursery a shot in the arm heading into the spring planting season.

"What we're going to try to do is cement the flooring for the greenhouse and make it more handicap accessible," said Gervais FFA Adviser Megan Dilson.

Nearly 200 people came out to the Feb. 23 event, located at the Mount Angel Event Center, composed of a variety of benefactors from former FFA members, parents, friends, regional agricultural businesses and more.

"We couldn't do it without our sponsors and companies willing to donate their time," Dilson said. "We have big companies like Knife River, Datavision, Fiber Fab, Ace Chemical Toilets and Industrial Welding Supply."

Many of the regional companies that support the Gervais FFA program lie outside city limits, but over the years have shown their support for the school district's CTE programs by either sponsoring the event, providing donations and services or sending representatives to the auction to take part in the festivities and get an idea for how the Gervais FFA program has fared over the previous school year.

"It's great to see them come together, because it's great to see them see the outcome," Dilson said. "These are tangible things that they can come out and look at and see where their money is going to."
