Local school board and fire district director positions, Aurora Fire District levy

Following the March deadline to apply for the upcoming May election, a number of contested races will be featured up and down the northern Marion County region.

In Woodburn, all three of the school district's board of director positions on the ballot will have multiple candidates. Fresh off of winning the 2018 mayoral race, current mayor and former Woodburn School District administrator Eric Swenson will throw his hat into another election, challenging incumbent school board director Linda Johnston for position four.

A former teacher in the Woodburn School District and Chemeketa Community College instructor, Johnston has served on the Woodburn School Board since 2007.

Swenson has also previously served on the city's budget committee and parks & recreation board.

Fellow incumbent Linda Reeves is seeking to retain her seat as position one director, challenged by former board member Gustavo Gomez, who served as a director from 2015 to 2018 before resigning his position for personal reasons last October.

Reeves has more than 40 years of experience in public education, serving a variety of teaching and administrative roles in Ohio, Texas and Oregon, most recently as North Marion School District curriculum director and superintendent before retiring. She was previously appointed to the school board in 2014 and retained her position in 2015.

Gomez currently serves as the city's community relations manager and has former experience serving on the Chemeketa Budget Committee.

Gomez's vacancy was filled by Noemi Legaspi, who was appointed to the position by the school board in December. She is seeking to retain her seat for the final two years of the term and is being challenged by John Rivas, who was among the candidates passed over by the board for the seat.

At the North Marion School District, directors Crystal Rostocil and Ricardo Verastegui are running unopposed to retain their current positions on the board.

The pair were selected in April, 2018 to fill the remaining terms of former board members Julie Miller and Patrick McArthur, respectively.

Jill Keppner is running for the district's third open position, which is currently held by Scott Mills, who did not apply to hold the seat.

In Gervais, board director Lorraine Martin is running unopposed to retain the seat she won in 2017, having filled the final two years of the position. In this year's election, the position she is seeking carries a four-year commitment.

Likewise, the district's other open seat was previously won in 2017 by board member Debbie Sullivan, who is not seeking reelection.

In her place, the position features a three-way contested race between Maria Caballero, Lenthal Kaup and Carl Wolff.

Caballero served on the Gervais School Board for 18 years before losing her seat to current board member Henry Bustamante in 2017. She also boasts six years of experience serving on the Oregon School Board.

Wolff also boasts 12 years of former Gervais School Board experience, and most recently has served on the district's budget committee.

The third candidate, Kaup, describes himself as a self-appointed watchdog of the district and has regularly run for positions on the board over the years.

The Mount Angel School Board features two open positions, one of which is contested by candidates John Conklin and Donna Hues, who was appointed to the seat in February.

The other position, currently held by vice chair Raymond Frey, has a single candidate — Teresa Kinkaid.

In St. Paul, current board members Doug Wyss, Genoveva Elias and Sean Connor are each running unopposed to retain their current positions.

Among the local fire district elections, the Aurora Rural Fire Protection District is the only one to have a contested race, where candidates Fred Hartley and Marc Anderson are seeking to fill the remaining two terms of the board's fourth position.

The Aurora Fire District is also seeking to renew and increase a five-year local option tax levy, proposing for 99 cents per $1,000 of assessed value, which would equate to $4.9 million over the next five years. It would replace the current levy, which is at a race of 49 cents per $1,000, and is set to expire.
