City of Woodburn is in full tilt with the First Street improvements, but the work should not disrupt any of the annual events and activities that take place downtown

City of Woodburn stresses that the work will not disrupt annual downtown events or daily activity.Woodburn's First Street Improvement projects are well underway, with road blocks and detours in place as construction crews go full tilt.

City of Woodburn spokesman Tommy Moore emphasized recently that while there is a lot of pavement being torn up and intersection closings popping up, none of the seasonal downtown events nor day-to-day activities are expected to be disrupted.

"That means favorites such as Music in the Park, the 2nd annual Taste of Woodburn or the 56th annual Fiesta Mexicana will proceed as planned with no delays or cancellations," Moore noted.

The city advised contractors in advance of the project to schedule work around the popular annual events. Additionally, while some minor inconveniences will crop up, plans are to have one side of the street open at all times so there is passage and daily business activities are not interrupted.PMG PHOTO: JUSTIN MUCH - First Street Improvement is going full tilt. "This is very exciting project for downtown Woodburn, with a number of improvements planned," Moore said.

He itemized the improvements as follows:

• Streetscape Improvements – The area along First St between Oak and Harrison will see street improvements, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and crosswalks, enhanced lighting, downtown appropriate street trees, updated intersection design as well as other amenities and improvements.

• Second Street Parking Lot Improvements – The parking lot located behind the Post Office will receive re-surfacing, landscaping, increased lighting, security cameras and other improvements to create a safe, inviting area for public use.

• Alley Improvements – Made between Cleveland to Garfield Streets.

Work on the demolition of the former Pix Theater is also underway on First Street. More parking area is anticipated to be available with that building's removal.
