Playing golf while boosting a Woodburn-area charitable mainstay was doubly rewarding for organizers and participants of the 34th Annual Rose-A-Rama Ladies Golf Tournament, "Ring Around the Roses," held June 8 at Woodburn Estates and Golf.
Fruits netted collectively by the 84 tournament participants were ceremoniously recognized on July 2 when organizers met with directors and personnel of Love INC of North Marion County to present a $1,100 check. It represents a little slice of the pie generated annually for the nonprofit, resources that allowed it to serve 1,640 people form 479 area families last year.
Additionally, the year saw Love INC provide one-time financial assistance totaling $40,000, succor distributed for urgent needs such as rent, bills, prescriptions, legal services and automobile repairs.
The Woodburn based Love Inc is one of six in Oregon, and there are 136 affiliates nationally. Each partners with numerous benevolent and faith-based entities to deliver the three-pillar platform: helping people in poverty; helping people out of poverty; addressing the causes of poverty.
One of the golf tournament's organizers, Dorothy Monnier, is also a Love INC volunteer. She knows firsthand how the group's resources help people at critical moments, and she's delighted that her golf group could assist the local helping-hand.
"Due to the outstanding response we had from tickets sold for Raffle Prizes, 50/50, Mulligans and Miracle Putts this year, we (made) a donation of $1,100 to Love Inc," Monnier noted. "This charitable nonprofit helps families, children, people re-entering the job market, seniors and the homeless here in the northern Marion County area.
"It is really so important to see the active participation of the Woodburn Estates and Golf, assisting the community of Woodburn in so many ways," she added.
Love INC Executive Co-Director Curt Jones said this type of assistance is always welcome, as are volunteers.
Jones said the local Love INC was established in 2009. The group managed to get a tenuous foothold over its first-five fledgling years. But from 2014 through last year, its auction fundraiser went from generating $5k to $27k, increasing each year and affording more help for those in need as a consequence.
Established programs the group provides include the Furniture Warehouse, Dental Van and Loads of Love. New programs including Transformational Mentoring, Financial Assistance, Utility Assistance, Woodburn Taskforce and North Marion Services Team.
In addition to the auction, the local Love INC has its own annual fund-raising golf tournament and receives donations from a variety of other channels, such as grants, churches, corporations and individuals. It is also mulling opening a thrift store, but the feasibility of that store is still being explored.
"Plans are in the motion for a thrift store; the opportunity is there and we are pursuing it aggressively," Jones said.
