All set for 'Mud, Sweat & BBQ'
Two events have become one, and the name has changed slightly. But the objective is the same as always: have some fun at Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm.
Woodburn Rotary announced that Mud, Sweat & Barbecue is taking place Saturday, Aug. 10, at Wooden Shoe, 33814 S Meridian Road, Woodburn.
Formerly known as the Mud, Sweat & Beers, this is the 5th annual event, and this year it is combined with the Firehouse Cookoff – the former barbecue fundraiser competition that ran from 2008-16 at Wooden Shoe — hence the "barbecue" in the title. There will still be beer and wine served, but the new name also serves to emphasize that everyone is welcome.
"We basically are combining the Firehouse Cookoff with Mud, Sweat & Beers, bringing the two events together just to make it more fun," said Paul Iverson, one of the event organizers. "The name Mud Sweat & Beers, while it is family friendly, sometimes when people hear the word 'beer' they may get the idea that it is not family friendly; that it's an adult-only event. And so we wanted to emphasize that it's a family event."
The mud and sweat portion involves the popular, albeit grubby, obstacle course around the farm. Participants will head out in measured groups beginning at 11 a.m. and likely running through 1 p.m. before the final group gets underway.
Runners are challenged by a slew of course obstacles, including mud pits and crawls, hay bale climbs, water slides and precipitous inclines. Registration for the run begins at 10 a.m.
Cost to participate is $150 for a team of 4; $45 for individuals age 21 and older ($50 on the day of the race); $35 for individuals under age 21 ($40 on the day of the race). Register in advance online at mudsweatbbq.com. Registration includes a commemorative t-shirt, post race beverage and entrance into the Garden Party and barbecue tasting.
For those who do not participate in the mud run, entry into the Garden Party is $10, which will be from 12 to 4 p.m.
Iverson said the chefs will likely begin seasoning their dishes the night before. This year the tastings will include brisket, along with the usual fare of beef, chicken and pork ribs.
"The thing that's different from the Firehouse Cookoff is we used to serve a meal. But once everyone gets to sampling, they get full," Iverson said. "So this year everyone gets to sample, relax, listen to music and then watch the runners come in."
The live music will be performed by the Ben Rice Trio.
There will be a people's choice winner, voted on by tossing cash in the bucket of your favorite barbecue chef. Proceeds from the event benefit Woodburn Rotary, which ultimately benefits the community through activities such as grants, free dictionaries for kids, Love Santa and the Boys and Girls Club.
