Expanded bus services mean more options for riders from Woodburn, Gervais, Brooks and Mount Angel

PMG PHOTO: JUSTIN MUCH - Woodburn Transit Center at First and Arthur streets downtown has seen little use during the summer months due to construction. But that will change when construction ends and additional stops, including Saturday service, are added to the Woodburn/Salem Express route in September.Timed just about perfectly with the completion of Woodburn's First Street improvements, the Woodburn Transit Center will be seeing an increase in activity beginning in September.

Salem Area Mass Transit District, a.k.a. Cherriots, announced that on Sept. 3 service routes will be increasing in number, and Saturday service will return to the schedule as well.

Among the routes slated to increase in volume is 10X, the Woodburn/Salem Express. The route currently has six round trips to Salem and no Saturday service. Changes will add two weekday trips, for a total of eight, and will add Saturday service with 3.5 round trips on that day.

Route 10X has two regular stops in Woodburn: at the transit center on First and Aurthur streets and at the Woodburn Bi-Mart, 1700 Mt. Hood Ave. It also has stops in Gervais, 4th and Douglas streets, and Brooks, Portland Road at Riverton.

First Street improvement construction has altered the downtown stop slightly this summer. But the transit center should be back in full operation by the time the additional routes take effect.

In Salem, 10X has stops at Chemeketa Community College, Capital and Marion streets and at Salem Transit Center downtown.

The Woodburn/Salem Express is one of six regional routes that will see additional service, but it's one of only two routes that will see an increase in weekday and Saturday service.

The North Marion County/Salem Express, Route 20x, which travels through Silverton, has a stop at Church and Cleveland streets in Mount Angel and at the Woodburn Bi-Mart, will not see any additional weekday trips. But 20x does stand to add Saturday service with 3.5 round trips, same as 10x.

Cherriots sources said the additional services are afforded through the 2017 Oregon Legislature's establishment of a dedicated funding source through a payroll tax. That's allowed public transportation providers throughout Oregon to expand services.

"This is the largest service enhancement in Cherriots history," said SAMTD General Manager Allan Pollock. "We are grateful to our state legislators who have made this momentous investment in public transportation to ensure the mobility of Oregonians for generations to come."

A proposed route change provided by Cherriots planners indicate the new 10X weekday route will be more conducive for commuters, adding a 6:47 a.m. stop at the transit center and a 6:53 a.m. one at Bi-Mart. The current earliest stops in Woodburn are 8:17 and 8:23 a.m. respectively.

There will also be one additional afternoon stop added. Currently the returning 10X afternoon busses leave Salem at 12:30, 2, 5 and 7:30 p.m. The new schedule adds a 4:30 p.m. Salem departure.

Additional service hours apply to Cherriots Local, Cherriots Regional, and Cherriots LIFT, which is the District's paratransit service. All later evening service begins Tuesday, Sept. 3, and all Saturday service begins Sept. 7.

The first Saturday bus will stop in Brooks at 8:55 a.m., Gervais at 9:03 a.m. before making 9:15 and 9:21 stops at the transit center and Bi-Mart. The final afternoon/evening return at those stops, respectively, are 6, 6:11, 6:22 and 6:26 p.m., while the sechedule offers a later Saturday morning option and earlier afternoon one. Route 20X Saturday schedule stands to be similar to 10X.

Cherriots officials said more service changes are expected in May 2020 when SAMTD plans to provide Sunday service for the first time. Buses also will begin operating on several federal holidays in 2020.
