Meanwhile, the city also announced that it is in the hunt for a new city manager, following the resignation of Amber Mathiesen.

Grassman, who had been serving as the Mount Angel City Council president, will serve out the term vacated last month by former Mayor Andrew Otte, who resigned Aug. 5 citing that he had moved out of town. That term runs through December of 2020.

Grassman has served on the city council since 2009 and as council president since 2016.

The city also reported that it approved a "mutual separation" with Mathiesen during its Tuesday, Sept. 3 meeting. Her final day was Wednesday.

Mathiesen has served as Mount Angel's city manager since October, 2016.

"It was just a mutual agreement between both of us (council and Mathiesen)," Grassman said. "Her last day was yesterday."

The city council will now seek applications to fill the vacant seat that opens with Grassman's move into the mayoral position. The mayor said applications will be accepted through the next council meeting, which is Monday, Oct. 7. Applications are available at city hall and online at

Meanwhile, the city also initiated a search for an interim city manager.

"We are already on the search for the interim city manager, and we'll see where that goes. And then we'll go through a formal process to sign a permanent city manager," Grassman said.
