Oregon State Police arrested a suspected in a hit-and-run Friday in connection with a crash that took place on Highway 99E between Brooks and Gervais Thursday night.

OSP, Woodburn Fire District and Oregon Department of Transportation responded to the crash at the 99E and Waconda Road intersection.

Police reported that at about 11:05 p.m. a silver 2007 Nissan Murano was traveling southbound on the highway when it veered out of its lane and struck a 2009 Kia Sportage operated by Rodion E. Ovchinnikov, 86, of Woodburn.

Ovchinnikov, who stopped at the Waconda Road intersection when the crash occurred, was initially transported Salem Hospital then to OHSU with serious injuries.

The driver of the Nissan fled the scene on foot, and police believe that person may have been picked up by another vehicle. Police subsequently issued a request that anyone with information regarding the operator of the Nissan Murano to contact OPS.

On Friday afternoon OSP reported that troopers arrested Angel Andres-Mercado, 47, of Woodburn, who was charged with failing to perform the duties of a driver and felony hit and run.

Andres-Mercado was lodged in the Marion County Jail, and the Marion County District Attorney's Office is investigating additional charges.
