Aurora City Councilor Brian Asher has been named as the new mayor, a term that runs through 2020

Asher will complete the term vacated last month by Kris Sallee. That term ends in January of 2021.

City records show that Asher was appointed to the council in April of 2017 and was elected to a full term in November of 2018. The sole applicant to complete the current mayoral term, Asher was unanimously approved. His council seat remains vacant.

City Recorder Scott Jorgensen noted that Asher's community involvement includes 22 years as a member of the Aurora Historical Society Board of Directors, serving also as the group's treasurer and president. Asher is the current chair of Aurora Parks Committee and has served on the McLoughlin Historical Society and Rose Farm.

"I'm honored to serve the people of Aurora in this role," Asher said of his mayoral appointment. "I look forward to continuing working with council and staff to increase volunteer involvement and citizen participation and ensure that the city is responsive to their needs."

Jorgensen noted that the city is now taking applications for the vacant council term, which expires in January of 2023. Candidates to fill the post are required to be registered voters who have lived in Aurora for no less than six months.
