North Marion High School announces senior award winners and a hybrid 2020 graduation ceremony

PMG PHOTO: JUSTIN MUCH - A hybrid graduation ceremony will put North Marion High Schools football field to use between 3 and 8 p.m. Friday, June 5.North Marion High School's multi-community complexion perhaps gives it an edge in juggling some aspects of remote scholastic activity.

Nonetheless, the Huskies' class of 2020 is confined to the same set of circumstances as its cohorts nationwide, enduring the COVID-19 conditions that are scotching traditional graduation celebrations everywhere.

That isn't stopping NMHS staff members from doing what they can, including holding virtual Senior Awards recognition on Tuesday, May 26, and posting that to the school's Facebook page.

For graduating students, awards night normally is the penultimate ceremonial observance, followed by graduation. This year, the school announced it will hold an equally creative graduation ceremony.

"For the graduation ceremony, we are having a hybrid mobile ceremony on our football field," NMHS Principal DeAnn Jenness said, noting that it will take place from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 5.

"Students will be signing up for a time slot of 30 minutes for 20 students. Each graduate can have (up to) 10 guests (from) two passenger vehicles.

"We will record the speeches and the evening for families to review on their own time," she said.

On May 26, Jenness and fellow educators Glenn Elliott, Julaine Furduy and Michael Stewart took turns in front of the video camera announcing each achieving senior during the roughly half-hour segment, beginning with valedictorians Yasmine Cida, KaiLee Jones, Erica Rodriguez and Hunter Wierstra, along with salutatorian Oscar Zurita.

"I want to thank all of you for being here today to celebrate the successes of North Marion High School students," Jenness said told the remote audience. "I want to thank the parents who worked tirelessly to help their students succeed. And lastly, the students who have been consistent throughout their high-school career to get to this point.

"Enjoy your successes; you have earned them."
