FFA, Les Schwab work to end hunger
Since 2015 Oregon FFA and Les Schwab Tire Centers have partnered in a Drive Away Hunger Initiative aimed at raising food and hunger awareness.
The initiative will take place throughout the month of October with FFA members, volunteers and Les Schwab employees gathering nonperishable food donations. Those donations will be accepted at Les Schwab Tire Centers, Wilco stores and Grange Co-op stores through Saturday, Oct. 31.
Oregon FFA Stewardship Officer Christa Carlon stressed that the timing of this initiative is important. With food banks and pantries gearing up for the upcoming holidays, there is a need for food and cash donations.
Carlon said last year the initiative helped raise 580,084 pounds of food in Oregon, equating to 435,171 meals.
"All FFA chapters are involved, at the least by helping to promote the initiative," Carlon said. "Unfortunately, the majority of FFA chapters and members are not able to participate in person this year. Some chapters are able to do more in-person events than others, it really depends on the school district's policy. All Les Schwab and Wilco stores in (the Woodburn) area are participating and serving as a drop site.
"This is an incredibly special project for Oregon FFA members, because they are given the opportunity to live out their motto of 'learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live and living to serve,'" Carlson added. "In this service initiative, FFA members can follow in the footsteps set by those at Les Schwab Tire Centers, as you see them giving back to their communities daily."
