Time to gussy up a scarecrow
It's scarecrow season, and the city of Woodburn is once again making it fun for residents.
Last year the city initiated a scarecrow-decorating contest, and area residents and businesses went to work on their creativity.
This year the contest is on again.
"It was a huge success last year so we're hopeful for another big turnout of applicants," city of Woodburn spokesman Tommy Moore said.
The inaugural contest had 32 entrants and more than 500 votes. Woodburn Pet Hospital's Happy Howl-o-ween, "Lick or Treat" captured first place last year, followed by "Brick Crow Family" and "Halloween Hero."
"Even though first and second place last year were separated by about five votes, this year we've separated the businesses into their own category from residential," Moore said.
The contest is open to all residents, businesses, organizations, churches and nonprofits within the Woodburn ZIP code – essentially anyone with a Woodburn mailing address.
First place winners get a $100 gift card, second place a $75 gift card and third place a $50 gift card. There will also be a $100 gift card awarded for Best Catrina (an elegantly dressed skeleton figure). Applications can be submitted at the Woodburn Public Library or online at the city's website, woodburn-or.gov, navigating to City of Woodburn contests. Participants will submit one photo of their scarecrow, which will be used for voting.
Applications will be accepted until the end of the business day Monday, Oct. 18. Voting will take place between Oct. 20 and 31.
