Arrest made in Brooks-Hopmere area
The Marion County Sheriff's Office activated its SWAT Team Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 16, at a Quinaby Road residence near River Road in the general area of the Hitchin' Post Bar & Grill.
MCSO Sgt. Don Parise said the deployment was made to help arrest Zachariah Phillips who had a warrant for his arrest on a charge of attempted murder. Law enforcement personnel arrived around 3:20 p.m. and were on the scene until nearly midnight, as motorists were advised to avoid the area and residents were advised to stay inside.
Parise said Phillips was held up inside a residence, and the incident took several hours to resolve as SWAT personnel used verbal negotiations to try and de-escalate the situation.
"After several hours, the situation was defused and resolved peacefully as Phillips agreed to come out of the residence and surrender to SWAT personnel who took Phillips into custody without further incident," Parise said.
Phillips eventually was taken to the Marion County Jail where he was lodged on the warrant and Quinaby Road was reopened.
"We would like to thank our residents for their patience as we had the road blocked for a considerable amount of time, which was necessary for the safety of everyone," Parise said.
