Former chair for the Woodburn School District board of directors reflects on past 12 years

Thank you! I'm moving on to the next chapter in my life. This year completes my 12th year on the Woodburn School Board. It has been an amazing journey in this district. We have continued to improve graduation rates and dual language success. We have more students completing the International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and the Seal of Biliteracy programs each year.

My favorite time in board meetings remains the recognition of students and staff. As a board we hear about the accomplishments of these dedicated people from ages 5 to 65-plus. We have a Strategic Plan that has grown and evolved over the last 20-plus years. My hope is that foundational piece of work continues to guide the work of the district.

Unlike many in this district, I was born here, graduated from high school in Woodburn and following graduation from Oregon College of Education returned to the Woodburn School District to begin my teaching career. After 37 years in the classroom I decided to stay in education by running for the school board. That work has been very rewarding.

I mentioned moving on. I was asked this winter to become the Garden Coordinator for the Community Garden located at First Presbyterian Church. I have enjoyed working in the garden with students from 4 to 18 years old. I have been delighted to see a new garden begin at Washington Elementary. The school garden at French Prairie is growing. Produce harvested from the Community Garden helps support the AWARE Food Bank. We have opened up more spaces for community members to join us in the garden.

Thank you to all the staff, students, parents and community members for their support of the Woodburn School District. You have made this responsibility as a board member very rewarding. See you in the garden!
