“It was probably the best attended that we’ve had thus far, so it’s grown a little more,” said Ed Everts, president of the cook-off who helped organize the event with the assistance of a number of volunteers. “At one time, we probably had well over 400 people on the property at once.”

Twelve teams participated in the event, which featured categories for chicken, pork and beef, as well as a Grand Champion award, for the team with the best combined scores, and a People’s Champion, which crowned the team that garnered the most tips.

We had a four-way tie in that area for different positions. We had ties in the pork and also in the Grand Champions.”

The team of Something’s Burning won the Grand Champion prize after taking first in pork and third in both beef and chicken. The win was a big turnaround for the Woodburn-based team after finishing seventh overall last year despite winning the 2012 beef category.

The event featured eight returning teams from 2012 along with four new teams that came prepared to face off against the veteran competition.

“Three of the four new teams actually placed in the beef category,” said Everts. Newcomers Milk Tooth BBQ took first, followed by Meat Sweats in second and Smokehouse 63 in fourth. “The new teams are evidence of growth. That’s really cool to see that.”

The husband-and-wife duo of Rimm City BBQ traveled the farthest to the event after making the trip from Gresham. Rimm City heard of the cook-off after attending a chicken barbecue at Wooden Shoe earlier in the year and decided to compete in the chicken and pork competition, where they finished near the middle of the pack.

“That’s consistency, and that’s pretty good considering some of the people they were competing against were here year after year,” said Everts. “If they come back again, they’ll be a contender for those top spots.”

Rounding out the winners was Bad Dads & Buddies, which tied for the top spot in chicken with Loco Ono, last year’s Grand Champion. Bad Dads won the tiebreaker that was determined by comparing the lowest scores among the six judges. The team was also the 2013 People’s Choice champion.

An additional surprise to the cook-off was the help of volunteers from The Estates, who assisted at the entrance of the event.

“That really helped the front counter move right along,” said Everts. “This thing couldn’t happen without the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm and the Iverson family, so it is a big deal. And of course, we did have the Woodburn FFA Alumni and the Woodburn Rotary’s help as well.”
