Feb. 1 event at Heritage Elementary School celebrates Russian dual language program

They also sang a Russian folk song about babushka and two geese.Heritage Elementary LINDSAY KEEFER - A first-grade class sings a song on the stage in the Heritage gymnasium before a crowd of parents, staff and friends.has been around for nearly 20 years, and the school's Russian dual-language program has been celebrated for at least most of that time.

The celebration continued Thursday night at the school's annual Russian Festival. The festival included arts and crafts created by students, as well as performances from classes K-5.

"This is a recognition of Russian culture, a celebration of the language and what we do as a school," said Lilia Zaltsman, the school's math instructional coach.

The performances from each class included songs, poems and retelling of Russian folk tales.LINDSAY KEEFER - Olga Amato's second-grade class, pictured with a Russian cake that traditionally represents welcoming guests into a home, performed three poems by Sergei Mikhalkov.
