The Gervais football team fell 49-28 on Friday against the Colton Vikings, closing the door shut on the Cougars' playoff hopes.

The Cougars (2-6, 1-3 PacWest) entered the game tied for third in the league standings, but were unable to keep the hosting Vikings (4-4, 1-3) out of the end zone.

The Cougars trailed 42-13 at the half, but had a spirited comeback attempt in the second half led by the backfield duo of Dyontae Navarrete and Noel Vasquez.

Navarrete, a sophomore, accounted for all four of the team's touchdowns.

The running back-turned quarterback completed six passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns while piling up 225 yards and a score on the ground.

Vasquez did the majority of the work through the air, catching all three touchdowns from Navarrete for 150 yards.

Gervais finishes its season at home this week when the Cougars host the Blanchet Catholic Cavaliers (6-2, 3-1) on Friday.
