Boys soccer: Woodburn defeats Mazama 3-0, advances to quarterfinals
From the moment Trevor Karsseboom took a shot on goal 12 seconds into their first round playoff contest against the Mazama Vikings, the No. 3 Woodburn Bulldogs were in complete control on Tuesday night at Woodburn High School.
But it took nearly an hour before the Bulldogs could convert that into a tangible result on the scoreboard.
Woodburn scored three times in the second half — twice off headers by reserve forward Rodolfo Campuzano — to defeat the Vikings 3-0 and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2018 4A Boys Soccer State Playoffs.
Woodburn (13-1, 11-1 Oregon West Conference) had little difficulty moving the ball against Mazama (8-5-1, 4-5-1 Skyline Conference), possessing the ball for nearly the entire game, most of which was spent on the Vikings side of the pitch.
But the Mazama defense, which surrendered just 13 goals all season coming into the playoffs, kept Woodburn scoreless for the first 40 minutes thanks to a handful of acrobatic saves from senior goalkeeper Fernando Torres.
It wasn't until the second half that Woodburn's constant pressure finally paid off, when sophomore forward Jimmy Martin was able to fend off a pair of Viking defenders near the endline and feed a pass to senior teammate Jairo Aguirre in front of the goal.
With his back to the goal in heavy traffic, Aguirre had no time to square up and take a direct shot. Instead, the forward opted to drive the ball behind him with his heel, getting past Torres into the left corner of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead 47 minutes into the game.
Woodburn struck again 10 minutes later, this time from the opposite side of the field where senior Jesus Rodriguez drove up the left side and delivered a ball into the penalty box.
Campuzano was there to receive the pass, diving head first and connecting with the ball inches above the ground to drive it into the goal.
Campuzano added one more for good measure in the 69th minute, finishing near the goal on a series of headers batted around the keeper's box.
With the victory, Woodburn moves on to the state quarterfinal round where they will host the Valley Catholic Valiants (11-3, 7-1 Cowapa League) Saturday at Woodburn High School.
The Valiants are coming off a 2-1 victory over Molalla in the first round and enter their contest against the Bulldogs on an eight-game winning streak.
