No. 1 Trojans defeat 3A No. 3 Blanchet Catholic 40-35 in championship game to improve to 14-1

The Kennedy girls basketball team entered 2019 with a big triumph under its belt, winning three consecutive games to claim the championship of the white bracket at the Salem Academy Crusader Tournament on Saturday.

PHIL HAWKINS - Kennedy sophomore Hailey Arritola was named tournament MVP after the No. 1 Trojans won the white bracket of Salem Academys Crusader Classic New Years Invitational.The 2A No. 1 Trojans took down the 3A No. 4 Blanchet Catholic Cavaliers (11-2) 40-35 in a defensive showcase in the title game on Saturday. Kennedy scored just three points in the opening quarter, but came back to tie the game at 16-16 heading into the halftime break.

The Trojans put the clamps down in the third quarter, allowing just two points to the Cavaliers to take a 26-18 lead heading into the final quarter. Kennedy maintained its advantage throughout the period. Blanchet was able to get within 38-35 with under a minute to play, but the Trojans held on for the victory.

PHIL HAWKINS - Kennedy senior Kalyssa Kleinschmit was joined by teammates Ellie Cantu and Hailey Arritola on the All-Tournament First Team.Kennedy took out 3A Oregon Episcopal 46-29 on Friday in the semifinal and ran through Gold Beach 81-28 in the opening round of play on Thursday.

Sophomore Hailey Arritola was named tournament MVP after the game, while teammates Kalyssa Kleinschmit and Ellie Cantu garnered First Team All-Tournament recognition.

Kennedy (14-1, 4-0 Tri-River) was scheduled to return to action this week against No. 8 Culver (10-1, 2-0) on Monday, followed by a Friday home game against Chemawa (4-6, 1-3).
