Woodburn wrestlers place third at Putnam
As the Woodburn wrestling team nears the end of January, they had two strong showings last week.
First came a 46-34 victory over the Seaside Seagulls on Jan. 23, followed by a third-place finish at the Joe Stewart Invitational, hosted at Putnam High School, on Saturday.
Led by the team's lower weight classes, the Bulldogs placed eight wrestlers, including three individual champions, to finish with 154 points, just two points points shy of second place Tigard. Pendleton won the event with 222.5 points.
Seniors Marcos Hernandez (120 pounds) and Angel Acevedo (145) each went undefeated on the day to win their respective brackets.
After opening with a bye, Hernandez beat his quarterfinal opponent from Tigard in 50 seconds and scored a second-round pin over St. Helen's Narcizo Garza. He took home the championship match in 5:29 over Stevenson's Aiby LaCombe.
In the 145-pound bracket, Acevedo opened with pins over his first two opponents before taking a 15-9 decision in the semifinals against Isaac Ledesma of Stevenson.
In the championship match, Acevedo and Madison's Edward Polyakov went into overtime, where Acevedo scored a takedown to win by 8-6 sudden victory.
The Bulldogs' third champion — junior Hector Paniagua — came in the 126- pound bracket where he and sophomore teammate Wesley Vasquez wrestled their way to the title match.
Paniagua took a forfeit victory over Vasquez after winning his first two matches of the day by pinfall. Vasquez also won his prior two matches by pin, scoring a 5:04 win over St. Helens' Tristin Buchanan to reach the finals against Paniagua.
Other placers include senior William Sandoval (138) and freshman Bryan Hernandez (113), each of whom bounced back from a third-round loss in the semifinals to win in the follow-up match to place third overall.
Rounding out the remaining placers were juniors Bryan Ramirez (120) and Freddy Hernandez (132), who both went 2-2 on the day to finish in fourth place overall.
Woodburn wraps up the regular season this week by honoring the team's senior wrestlers at the program's four-way home dual on Wednesday against North Marion, Estacada and Molalla.
The Bulldogs then travel to Clackamas High School on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Bill Geister Invitational.
The Woodburn Bulldogs will compete in the District Championship tournament at TIllamook on Feb. 8-9.
