Cougars edge Wolverines in points earned on the mat, but fall 30-27 due to more forfeit weight classes.

The Gervais wrestling team fell by a narrow 30-27 margin to the Santiam Wolverines on Jan. 22.

Despite the loss, the Cougars beat the Wolverines on the mat, outscoring Santiam 15-12 in matches decided between wrestlers.

Junior Alex Giron (195 pounds) and senior Jonathan Cruz-Lopez (152) led the way, scoring pins over their opponents.

Giron defeated Weston Watts in the first minute of his match, while Cruz-Lopez took down Zach Mitchell half way through the second round.

The Cougars' third victory on the evening came in a 10-7 decision between sophomore Alexys Zepeda over Riley Rothrock.

Skylar Kempton (106) and Fabian Lucero (160) each fell in their matches. Santiam picked up three victories by forfeit while Gervais added two of their own. The remaining four weight classes were decided by double forfeit.

Gervais wraps up the regular season this week with a trip to Vernonia for a Special District 1 meet on Feb. 1.
