Calvin Sahlin paces boys team with 83 on first day, Patzer and Boese lead girls team

The North Marion boys and girls golf teams concluded their 2019 season last week after competing in the regional qualifying tournament to the state championships.

Led by a trio of competitive bests by Calvin Sahlin, Owen Arnett and Jacob Temple, the boys team rallied to overtake the Tillamook Cheesemakers for sixth place at Quail valley Golf Course in Banks on May 6-7.

They were joined by teammates Colby Shorter and Carson Hubbard to post a two-day score of 788 (391, 397), beating out the Cheesemakers by five strokes after opening the first day of competition at the bottom of the regional standings.

Sahlin came out of the gates in rare fashion to open the tournament, knocking home an 83 to put himself in the running for an individual berth to the state tournament.

Arnett followed 10 strokes behind with a score of 93, also a competitive best, but the rest of the team was unable to break 100. Shorter was the closest, coming in at 101, followed by Hubbard (114) and Temple (119).

And while Sahlin and Arnett fell back in the standings on the second day of competition, scoring a 99 and 120, respectively, their teammates rose up in their place.

Hubbard saw a two-stroke improvement to score a 112, finishing with a combined score of 226 to place 33rd overall. Temple saw the biggest improvement, shaving 25 strokes off his score to put up a competitive best mark of 94.

He finished the tournament in 29th place, tied with Arnett with a combined score of 213.

Shorter saw a nine-stroke improvement, putting up a 92 on the second day to finish in 19th place with a score of 193.

Sahlin's 182 led the team, giving him a 14th-place finish on the day.

Although the Huskies finished six strokes higher than their first day score, it was enough to overtake the Cheesemakers, who brought up the bottom of the standings at 793 overall.

Seaside won the regional championship at 643, followed by state qualifiers Valley Catholic (690) and Banks (747).

North Marion girls

The North Marion girls had a tough day to open their tournament at Quail Valley, seeing their state qualifying aspirations melt away after two of their players were disqualified.

Mallory Patzer and Alana Walls led the team with scores of 118 and 119, respectively, followed by Raymee Boese's 126. But teammates Samantha Simon and Vivan McCullough DQ'd, keeping the team from registering a team score on the day, and thus made them ineligible to qualify for state.

But the team rallied back on the second day. Simon and McCullough logged scores of 128 and 130 to put them on the board, and Boese led the team with a 124 to finish with a two-day score of 250 for 25th place.

Patzer hit 129 to finish at 247 and a team-best 23rd place, while Walls hit 143 for a two-day score of 262 for 30th place.

Valley Catholic (724) won the tournament, followed by state qualifiers Astoria (879) and Seaside (908).
