The North Marion Huskies will send a trio of representatives to 2019 4A State Track and Field Championships on May 17-18.
Hosting the Tri-Valley Conference Championships over the weekend, the Huskies qualified senior Mar Verastegui in the girls triple jump after claiming the district title in the event on Saturday.
On the boys side, sophomore teammates Parker Barton and Tyler Manning each qualified with runner-up finishes in the triple jump and javelin, respectively.
For Verastegui, it will be her third consecutive trip to the state meet and second straight year in the triple jump.
Unlike her sophomore and junior years when she qualified as runner-up, this time she'll be making the trip as a district championship, winning the triple jump with a season-best mark of 33-09.25 to outleap second-place Abby Hill of Gladstone (32-06.50).
Last year, Verastegui finished seventh at the state meet with a distance of 34-07. Her first state experience came as a sophomore when she qualified in the long jump, but she missed out on repeating in the event last year when she finished third in the event.
Unfortunately, the same was true this year. After placing second in the preliminary round with a jump of 15-08.50, she was beat out by Madras sophomore Olivia Symons, who leapt to the front of the pack with a mark of 16-03.25, pushing Verastegui to third, just two inches shy of Molalla's Elizabeth Grandle for the second spot.
For the boys, Barton and Manning will each make their state debut this week.
Barton placed second in the triple jump with a personal-record jump of 38-10.75, beating out teammate Jarrett Adair for the last qualifying spot by just 0.25 inches.
Manning qualified in the javelin, where he led the preliminary round with a throw of 158-09, before placing second to district champion David Stamm (171-00) of Estacada.
