Woodburn team wins U12 State Cup
When the 2019 Far West President's Cup youth soccer tournament kicks off in Norco, California, this month, there will be just one team in the U12 boys bracket representing the state of Oregon.
And they're from Woodburn.
The 4-H 07B Elite team coached by Joel Estrada and Ben Gonzalez won the 2019 State Cup on May 5, qualifying for the regional tournament that will take place from June 11-16 in Southern California, east of Los Angeles.
The team — Diego Albizo, Misael Diaz, Luis Segovia, Gerardo Camacho, Sebastian Lopez, Jay R. Flores, Eddy Rangel, Derick Cuello, Noah Gonzalez, Addison Samuell, Anthony Fuentes, Hayden Estrada, Israel Perez, Ale Mendez — consists of boys mainly from the Woodburn area, in addition to some from Gervais and Salem.
While many of the boys have been playing together for several years prior, this iteration of the team formed just over a year ago and has seen much success in the past 12 months.
Woodburn Elite won their fall Oregon Youth Soccer Association league and repeated as league champions in the spring prior to winning the State Cup.
The team qualified for the State Cup pool play in April, going 1-0-1 to win their respective group and advance to the quarterfinal bracket.
Woodburn moved on to the state semifinals with a 3-2 win over the Saints on April 27 and punched its ticket to the State Cup Championship a day later with another 3-2 victory, this time over EST.
In the championship game, Woodburn beat a team from Portland by a 2-0 margin, securing the team's qualification to the President's Cup. The regional tournament is a 16-team bracket, divided into four pools, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the quarterfinals.
