Bulldogs earn first state playoff victory since '99, first quarterfinal trip since '98

PMG FILE PHOTO: PHIL HAWKINS - Junior forward Yahaira Rodriguez was one of five Bulldogs to be named to the Oregon West Conference First Team. The Woodburn girls soccer team advanced to the state quarterfinals for just the third time in program history after defeating the Valley Catholic Valiants 1-0 on Tuesday in Beaverton.

The Bulldogs (11-2-2, 9-1-2 Oregon West) travelled to Valley Catholic High School for the first round of the 2019 4A Girls Soccer State Playoffs against the defending state finalist Valiants (7-6-2, 6-0-2 Cowapa), who went undefeated in conference play to claim the Cowapa League championship.

Facing a vaunted defense that had given up just three goals in its previous eight games, Woodburn was able to pull out the victory thanks in part to their own defensive prowess, along a game-winning goal from Conference Player of the Year finalist Myranda Marquez.

The Bulldogs' sophomore forward was one of five Woodburn players to earn First Team All-Conference honors prior to the start of the state playoffs, joining junior defender Alyssa Padilla and senior defender Lily Duran, senior goalkeeper Carla Zamora and junior forward Yahaira Rodriguez.

In total, the team garnered eight selections to the Oregon West All-Conference team in addition to head coach Andrea Whiteman being named Coach of the Year. Senior Bailey Castro picked up a Second Team nod, while freshman defender Caitlyn Spencer and freshman midfielder Cassidy Garibaldo received Honorable Mention consideration.

The victory over Valley Catholic put Woodburn into the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1998 and gave the Bulldogs their first state playoff victory since the 1999 season. In total, the Woodburn girls soccer team has made six state playoff appearances in program history, with its best finish coming in 1997 when the Bulldogs lost 1-0 to La Salle in the semifinals of the 3A/2A/1A playoffs in a game that was decided 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Woodburn has a tough draw ahead in the quarters, traveling to Gladstone to face the No. 1 Gladiators (14-1, 10-0 Tri-Valley Conference). Gladstone has won 12 straight contests since suffering its lone loss of the season, a 2-1 contest against No. 3 Marist (13-1-2, 8-0 Sky-Em).

The Gladiators won 9-0 over Mazama (6-9, 4-6 Skyline) in its first round game on Tuesday.

Kick off time has yet to be determined for Saturday's game between Woodburn and Gladstone. The winner will advance to the state semifinals on Nov. 12 to face either No. 4 Hidden Valley (13-2, 8-2 Skyline) or No. 5 North Marion (10-3-2, 6-2-2 Tri-Valley).
