OSAA cancels remaining Winter State Championships
The Woodburn and North Marion basketball programs scheduled to open the 4A State Quarterfinal tournaments in Forest Grove Thursday will stay at home after the OSAA announced it was canceling the remaining Winter State Championships due to the continued outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
"As this unprecedented public health emergency continues to evolve, we believe that the responsibility to our member schools and communities regarding the health and safety of participants remains our highest priority," said Peter Weber, OSAA Executive Director.
The OSAA initially announced that the tournaments would be conducted without fans in attendance. Following the cancelation of the Pac-12 college basketball tournaments, the OSAA canceled the remainder of the 5A tournaments, which had opened Wednesday at Gill Coliseum at Oregon State University.
Shortly after, the OSAA made a blanket cancelation of all winter state championship events, including dance and drill competitions, in addition to the basketball tournaments.
The OSAA's press release continued, touching on reimbursement for tickets and future updates regarding spring athletics:
"The OSAA will continue to collaborate with Oregon's public health authorities, including guidance from the Governor, OHA, and ODE, in order to help slow the transmission of the coronavirus.
"We are working with our ticketing partners to ensure those who purchased tickets for future sessions are reimbursed.
"The OSAA will have updates soon about Spring activities and contests that are scheduled to begin next week."
