Canby dance named Class 6A team of the month
Canby's dance team did not get the opportunity to win its sixth straight state championship.
But the Cougars did finish the season with a trophy.
The Canby dance squad was named the Les Schwab Class 6A team of the month for March, receiving a commemorative trophy and $100 donation, courtesy of Les Schwab Tires.
"It was a lovely surprise and a nice uplifting thing to hear in the midst of all things getting canceled," Canby dance coach Jennifer Chaffee said. "This team and these families needed a little pick me up in the throws of losing our friends and family night, state championships, traditions, and so much more. It was a very abrupt end to our season, and getting this positive news helped lift our spirits."
Each month throughout the school year, September through May, Les Schwab Tires and the OSAA recognize a varsity team of the month for each of the six classifications. Each winning team will be chosen based on performance, dedication in the classroom, and service to the community.
Chaffee said the award is a reflection of the entire program of parents, dancers, coaches and school administration, as well as teachers, students, and the community.
"This is a team of 35 student athletes who balance academics, family, social life, and a demanding sport for a solid nine-month season," Chaffee said. "That is a lot to balance for these young adults, and they do it well. They accept the coaches' feedback, correction, and crazy ideas. They show up every day ready to dance and bring these routines to life. They help create, clean, inspire each other and their coaches. Someone recognized that, and I'm so thankful they did."
