Husband and wife duo combined for three state titles, five league championships over 11-year period

Pete and Kerry Hall — the husband and wife coaching duo at the helm of the most successful era of girls basketball at Kennedy High School — announced they will not be returning for the 2020-21 season.

"It was our choice," Kerry Hall said. "We just decided with where our family's going, you just have to do what's best for your family, and that's kind of what it came down to."

The decision comes on the heels of the pair's third 2A state championship, which culminated in a 48-26 win over Monroe in the title game of the 2020 State Championship tournament in Pendleton in March.

Less than a week later, the OSAA canceled the remainder of the winter sports season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and ultimately the spring season and June summer basketball season as well.

Kerry and Pete's daughter, sophomore Reese Hall, was a starting member of this year's championship team. Their younger son, Gavin, is in middle school and their eldest son, Luke, is attempting to walk on to the men's basketball program at the Oregon Institute of Technology.

"There's just a lot coming up in our life," Kerry said. "We've been so busy, and then Luke going to OIT — we want to be able to have the opportunity if he makes the team to be able to go watch him play."

The Trojans girls basketball team won its first state championship in program history in 2016 and went on to win two more in 2018 and 2020, as well as third-place finishes in 2017 and 2019. Over that span, Kennedy won five consecutive Tri-River Conference titles and went 40-0 against league opponents in Kerry and Pete's final three seasons.

Their coaching tenure began with the 2009-10 team when Kerry and Pete took over for former Kennedy head coach Joe Cho. The pair made their first state playoff appearance in the 2011-12 season, then in the 2013-14 season began a seven-year stretch of consecutive state playoff appearances. In 11 years at the helm, the Halls never finished with a record below .500 and won 14 or more games every season.

The Trojans won 20 or more games in five of the past six seasons and posted double digit win totals in league for eight straight years.

Since 2010, the Kennedy girls have amassed a record of 227-81, including 115-37 against Tri-River opponents and 20-6 in the state playoffs.
