Gervais roundup: Hanson, Limage lead track team at Regis, softball team picks up first win
Track and Field
Seniors Brian Limage and Katie Hanson picked up where they left off the week prior, combining for five victories to pace the Gervais track team at Regis High School on Thursday.
The hosting Rams swept both sides of the competition, scoring 106 points for the boys and 159 points for the girls. The Gervais girls placed third out of five teams with 36 points, edging past East Linn Christian (35) and Crosshill Christian (26).
The Gervais boys placed fifth with 32 points, just behind Salem Academy (35) and Crosshill Christian (37).
Limage was unable to match the pace he set at Colton when he set a new personal record in the 200, but his time of 23.56 at Regis was still plenty fast enough to beat out the competition by a nearly three-second margin.
Limage added a first-place finish in the 100 with a time of 11.43 in his first foray in the event in a high school competition.
He was joined in the winners circle by sophomore teammate Javier Rodriguez, who led the long jump field with a PR-mark of 18-2.
Hanson tallied three victories on the day, sweeping the 100 (13.13) and 200 (27.42) events while adding a win in the long jump with a mark of 14-11.
Fellow senior Judith Santos picked up a pair of third-place finishes in the distance events, finishing the 800 in 3:09.13 and the 1,500 in 7:01.03. Araceli Vasquez likewise placed third in the javelin with a mark of 95-2, improving on her distance the week prior by two feet, four inches.
On the boys side, Rodriguez added a third-place finish in the 400 with a PR-time of 57.50, while fellow sophomore Juan Esquivel placed third in the high jump with a height of 4-8.
The Cougars return to the track on Wednesday when they travel to Salem Academy to compete in a four-way district meet against the hosting Crusaders, North Clackamas Christian and Colton.
The Gervais softball team picked up its first victory of the season in emphatic fashion last week, beating the visiting Jefferson Lions 20-5 in a home contest on April 20.
It was the second 20-run game of the season for the Cougars, who fell 27-20 to Culver to open the season.
Gervais (1-2) enters the third week of the season with a pair of home games that were scheduled for Monday against Colton (5-0) and Tuesday against Perrydale (1-1). The Cougars finish the week at Central Linn (1-1) on Friday.
