Woodburn girls advance to state golf showcase
The Woodburn girls golf team didn't need a full squad this year to make sure they would be fully represented at this year's 4A state showcase tournament.
With just three members on the varsity team the Bulldogs each had to earn their trip to next week's final competition at Trysting Tree on their own — and that's just what they did.
Led by a first-place finish from freshman Hilaria Trevino, the Bulldogs placed all three of their golfers inside the top six at the Special District 2 girls golf championship held May 10-11 at Santiam Golf Club, allowing each one to advance to the showcase tournament that is taking the place of the traditional OSAA state event.
Trevino won the individual district title with a two-day score of 184 (95, 89), taking the top spot in the tournament by a 15-stroke margin of victory. Junior Ana Sanchez followed with a 230 (116, 114), placing her fifth overall to garner First Team honors with Trevino.
Freshman Neyda Segura followed just behind at 236 (125, 111) to place sixth and earn Second Team honors.
It was a relatively small field at the district tournament, with just 22 golfers competing across four teams. Only two programs — Salem Academy and Newport — were able to field a full four-person squad. Newport ended up winning the district title with a two-day score of 947 while Salem Academy posted a score of 1024.
