Girls team advances to 4A state showcase, Brewer to represent Huskies at Trysting Tree Golf Club

PMG PHOTO: PHIL HAWKINS - North Marion's Mallory Patzer led the Huskies with score of 109, as the girls golf team placed fourth-through-seventh in the individual standings. Patzer was followed by teammates Vivian McCullough (119), Laila Brooks (121) and Lana Shevchenko (124).The North Marion golf program will be well-represented at the 2021 4A state showcase tournament after both the girls and boys programs won their respective district titles.

Competing at Arrowhead Golf Course near Molalla on Monday, the Huskies were the lone program to field both boys and girls teams, as golf programs across the state have seen decreased participation among smaller school programs.

In the girls case, North Marion was the only school to bring a full four-person team to the competition, making the Huskies the district champions by default.

Mallory Patzer led the Huskies with a fourth-place finish, shooting a 109 on the day, including a front-nine score of 51.

Patzer performed well on Arrowhead's quartet of par 3 holes, shooting bogeys on the second, 12th and 14th holes, while sinking her lone par of the day on the seventh hole.

Teammates Vivian McCullough (119), Laila Brooks (121) and Lana Shevchenko (124) followed in the standings, placing fifth through seventh, respectively. Baylie Brotherton rounded out the team with an 11th-place score of 146.

For the boys, it was a head-to-head battle against the Molalla Indians, as the only two programs to field full teams.

PMG FILE PHOTO: PHIL HAWKINS - North Marion's Carson Hubbard placed runner-up behind teammate and district champion Jack Brewer, as the Huskies edged the Molalla Indians by 24 strokes to win the district championship.Led by district champion Jack Brewer's score of 81, the Huskies finished with a team score of 322, beating the Indians by 24 strokes.

Brewer sank seven bogeys and eight pars on the day, picking up a birdie on the par 4 16th hole as he cruised through the back nine with a three-over score of 39.

Teammate Carson Hubbard followed with a runner-up score of 103. Joe Null rebounded from a 75 on the front nine to score 63 on the back, placing 11th with a score of 138.

Vasily Anfilofieff rounded out the team with a 12th-place score of 150.

Due to the unusually small field of golfers — 11 girls and 12 boys — coaches decided to forego the usual qualifications to advance to the final state tournament. Typically the top two teams would advance to state, in addition to at-large golfers who finish inside the top 5.

While the girls team was invited to compete at the state showcase at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis on Tuesday, coaches decided not to qualify either North Marion or Molalla from the boys side. Instead, Brewer will represent the Huskies as a lone competitor at the state event.

Brewer tees off with the second pairing at 8:39 a.m., while Patzer opens for the girls at 11:41 a.m., followed by Shevchenko (11:50 a.m.), McCullough (12:08 p.m.) and Brooks (12:17 p.m.). Brotherton will serve as an alternate for the Huskies should it be necessary.
