The Cougars defended home court 3-0 against resilient Trojans squad, including close call in 26-24 second set.

When Gervais's volleyball team beat Kennedy 3-0 on Monday, Sept. 20, it was the first time they had done so in at least eight years across league, non-league, and tournament play. The Cougars completed the sweep with scores of 25-9, 26-24, and 25-13 to accomplish the feat.

"It's nice — for these girls it's a big win," Gervais head coach Molly McCargar said. "I think that will help going into Wednesday with the momentum. It's not often that they beat Kennedy in the last several years. It helps their spirit a little bit. I don't know what to say."

The first set was all Gervais and then some. The Cougars jumped out to 17-3 lead in the set, taking advantage of miscommunications on the Kennedy side of the net and some hot serving from Gervais. Kennedy got a string of points back near the end of the set, but Gervais cruised to a 25-9 first set win.

The second set saw Kennedy bow its back and put up a much stronger fight. Gervais again jumped out to an early lead, going up 8-2, but the lead wouldn't last. Kennedy came roaring back to cut the deficit to 12-10, then tied the game up 15-15 a little more than halfway through the set before eventually taking the lead 15-18.

Gervais battled back and the two teams went point for point from 19-19 until the Cougars eventually won the second set 26-24.

"We just lost focus in the second set," McCargar said. "I think they let their guard down a little bit and didn't keep it up. They let little mistakes get them.

"Not being in position, not knowing where they're supposed be in their rotations, stuff that they do know, but then having these moments of, 'Oh, I forgot,' for whatever reason," McCargar continued. "I don't know. But not focused."

The third set more closely resembled the first. The two teams battled it out evenly early on, tying it up 5-5. From there Gervais went on a five-point run before stopping a run of Kennedy's. Gervais finished the third set 25-13 after putting together a 13-4 stretch of plays.

With the win the Cougars (3-1 in league, 3-5 overall) sit third in league behind Culver and Salem Academy. Gervais was unable to capitalize on the momentous win over the Trojans in the next game. The Cougars ran into a buzzsaw against Salem Academy (8-2), and wound up getting swept 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-11) on Wednesday, Sept. 22.

On Thursday, Sept. 23 travelled to Delphian (1-11) and suffered a 3-1 loss (18-25, 25-15, 20-25, 21-25). The teams next chance for victory will be on the road against Western Christian (3-3 in league, 6-6 overall) on Thursday, Sept. 30.
