Volleyball and football teams continue to dominate heading toward postseason, XC sets PRs

Volleyball

St. Paul volleyball continues to be one of the preeminent forces at the 1A level. The Bucks are currently in the middle of an impressive 15-game winning streak, all but one of which were sweeps in straight sets. In fact, prior to Thursday, Oct. 14's matchup against Willamette Valley Christian (13-7) the volleyball team hadn't lost a set since they faced off against the High Desert League's Adrian Antelopes (13-10) on September 17 at the East/West Classic.

Already guaranteed the Casco League championship, should they defeat Crosshill Christian (9-7) on Tuesday, Oct. 19, the team has a chance to finish out its league season with a sterling 14-0 record. What's more impressive, St. Paul hasn't lost a single set to any Casco League competition. At the time of this writing, the Bucks (25-4) are ranked third in the state at 1A.

Football

Like its volleyball compatriots, the St. Paul football team is also ranked third in the state at 1A. The 8-man juggernaut has been near perfect on the season; the only blemish being a 50-40 shootout against No. 2 ranked Powder Valley. Most recently, the team made the long trek down to Waldport where they put up a staggering 80 points on the home team. That offensive output gave the team the top spot for points scored at the 1A level.

The team has three more games on the docket at the time of this writing. St. Paul will first travel to Camas Valley (2-3) in a rematch on Friday, Oct. 15; the Bucks won the first matchup 67-22 on Friday, Sept. 24. From there they'll return home to face-off against Perrydale (4-1) on Thursday, Oct. 21, and finish out the regular season against Mohawk (2-2) on Friday, Oct. 29.

Cross Country

St. Paul's cross-country teams have been steadily turning in quality results all season. On the boys team, seniors Matthew Petrjanos and Cade Olson were two of just 22 racers in St. Paul's 2A/1A District 2 to post a result in a 5,000-meter race below 20 minutes. Petrjanos did it at the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational with a personal record of 19:23.9, and Olson did it at the Paul Mariman Invitational with a time of 19:58.4. Other St. Paul boys racers with a top 50 time in District 2 are junior Jackson Cook at the 30th spot (20:40.5) and junior Mason Cacka at the 47th spot (22:04.5).

The girls team has seen its members set personal bests as well, all of which were at the Paul Mariman Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 9. Senior McKenna Olson set her personal best for St. Paul with a time of 27:26.7. Olson ran a 25:57.2 as a freshman at McNary High School. Fellow senior Nadir Cortes set her personal record at the same invitational, notching a 25:55.5 time. Senior Niki Morales set her PR at the 28:23.0
