North Marion overwhelms Astoria in opening round
The Huskies are once again in the 4A quarterfinals. The girls soccer team dismantled visiting Astoria (7-6-3) in the opening round of the state playoffs by a margin of 6-0, the most lopsided in any of the opening round matchups this year.
North Marion (11-3-1) got things started in the first half with a big showing from standout senior forward Dominique Huapeo, who notched a hat trick inside the first 40 minutes to get things started for the Huskies. Her first goal came at 32:16 of the half, getting the ball on a free kick assist from senior midfielder Teagan Welch.
Huapeo's second goal of the night came at the 25:26 mark. Junior Adrie Lader crossed the ball in from the right corner, finding Huapeo in the middle of the box for the easy put-away, and North Marion led 2-0.
The final goal of the first half hat trick came just three minutes later. Sophomore Caile Lader passed the ball into the box low, and Huapeo slide tackled the ball into the back of the net at 22:01 of the half.
When the half ended, North Marion led 3-0. When the final horn sounded, North Marion had doubled the score.
Now firmly into the quarterfinals, the Huskies will rematch the Philomath Warriors (10-2-3) on Saturday, Nov. 6. Philomath won the first matchup 1-0 in the season opener on Tuesday, Aug. 31.
