With Wednesday's victory over Kennedy, the Cougars captured top ranking in state 2A.

PMG PHOTO: TANNER RUSS - Gervais junior Ava Sellers led her team in scoring against Kennedy with 17 points.MOUNT ANGEL, Ore.—The Gervais High School girls basketball team made the short trip to Kennedy and routed the home team 51-27 on Wednesday, Jan. 5, pushing the Cougars winning streak to 10 and as of Saturday, Jan. 8, the team is now the No. 1 ranked team in the state at 2A. The win streak includes victories over 6A, 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A competition.

Against Kennedy, Gervais was led by junior Ava Sellers with 17 points, including a massive first quarter in which the wing scored nine points. Sophomore Olivia Boyd scored 10 points in the contest, eight of which came in the first quarter. All told, Gervais outscored Kennedy 23-4 in the first eight minutes, and 39-8 in the first half.

The Trojans opened the scoring up a little in the second half. Senior Alek Eyles scored eight points in the final 16 minutes and tallied 14 on the night.

Santiam came to Mount Angel on Thursday, Jan. 6 and defeated the Trojans 55-39. The 39 points scored against Santiam marked a new scoring high for the season, previously 30 points in the team's victory over Catlin Gabel.

Gervais (11-2) is scheduled to face Colton (7-2) on Wednesday, Jan. 12, in a battle of top Tri-River Conference teams.

Kennedy (2-7) next heads on the road to face off against Colton on Monday, Jan. 10.
