Kennedy wrestlers picked up wins at Dayton Invitational
At the Dayton Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 8, Kennedy through down with 20 other teams from across Oregon and southwest Washington and picked up a fair share of victories against teams of all sizes.
A pair of Kennedy's girls wrestlers also took part at the invitational. Alex Geschwill went 3-1 on the day, earning a 9-1 major decision over Sutherlin's Hailey Holgat, pinning Rainier's Daysha Holmes in 32 seconds and pinning Holgat in 2:31 to take third place.
Kennedy's Kira Boitano competed in the 110-pound weight class, suffering a pair of defeats to McKay's Madylin Xiong.
At heavyweight, Kennedy's Briggs Snell got his day started with an 11-second pinfall of Yamhill-Carlton's Luis Jimenez. Snell was pinned in the next match against Camas's Ameer Shaheen, but bounced back with consecutive pins over Taft's Allen Delgadillo and Vernonia's Isaiah Naeve. In his final match of the day, Snell was pinned by McNary's Anthony Cruz-Lopez in the consolation semifinals.
In the 182-pound weight class Kennedy's Zachary Talbot suffered a pair of pinfalls, first against Spyre Nelson of Willamina/Falls City and then against Warrenton's Levi Cabalona.
At 170 pounds, Kennedy had a pair of competitors representing the school's colors. Griffin Kilbourne got his day started with a pin over Dayton's Dylan Phipps in 1:10, but came up short in the quarterfinals against McNary's Dominik O'Farrell in a 4-2 decision loss. He bounced back with a third-round pin over Rainier's Donovan Smith before being ultimately losing via injury to Estacada's Mark Youngberg.
Also at 170 pounds, Kennedy's Mathew Chapman received a bye in the opening round of his side of the bracket but suffered a pair of defeats later, getting pinned by Warrenton's James Mickelson and then losing a 7-0 decision to Sutherlin's Tauj Flora.
In the 132-pound weight class, Kennedy's Rylee Walker suffered a pair of pinfall defeats to Yamhill-Carlton's Israel Palomar and McNary's David Ramirez Sierra.
At 126 pounds, Jesus Espinoza got his day started with a second round pin (2:54) over McKay's Kelvin Yan. Espinoza was subsequently bested by Sutherlin's Brandon Bartlett and Colton's Nate Baurer.
At 120 pounds, Kennedy wrestler Adam Beltran Reyes pinned Taft's Abraham Roman in just 36 seconds and followed it up with an equally impressive 49-second pin of McNary's Liam Koenig. Beltran Reyes suffered a pair of pins himself, however, losing to Yamhill-Carlton's Caden Hill in the third round and Estacada's Caleb Reilly in the second.
At 106 pounds, Kennedy's Timothy Kennedy suffered a pair of first round pins at the hands of Yamhill-Carlton's David Wheeler and McNary's Pedro Schay Vega.
