Butteville Cemetery awarded heritage grant
Butteville Pioneer Cemetery is one of 21 grant recipients from Oregon Heritage, a division of Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, for projects across the state that support preservation of historic cemeteries.
Projects range from monument repair to information kiosks and awards range from $390-$8,000. A total of $70,265 was awarded.
Funded projects include monument repair, placing markers on unmarked graves, fence repair, install kiosks with maps and historical information, tree trimming and felling, and road repair.
This grant program is for projects that support the preservation of historic cemeteries. The state designation of a historic cemetery is one that includes the burial of at least one person who died before Feb. 14, 1909. It is a project of the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries and is empowered by the Legislature to develop and maintain a listing of all pioneer and historic cemeteries in Oregon, assist in the maintenance of historic cemeteries and more.
