FILE PHOTO - Residents of northern Marion County are among dozens who show their animals at the Marion County Fair. The Marion County Fair is July 6-9 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, with about 27,000 people anticipated to take part in carnival rides, explore the dozens of vendors and appreciate the agricultural wealth of the county through various displays and auctions.

At the center of The Marion County Fair are the 4H and FFA programs. The 4H and FFA organizations involvement in the fair give kids the opportunity to enter their animals in competitions and show exhibits. The livestock auction at the end of the animal shows and competitions is a highlight of the fair, for which many community members and business owners show up to support the kids.

Other festivities include the All Alaskan Racing Pigs, in which porcine athletes compete around a full-contact speedway; pedal pullers, in which kids race in modified pedal tractors; STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) interactive experiments Friday and Saturday; barnyard adventures, in which families can have an interactive farming experience; Flyball Dogs, which compete in a head-to-head relay race with hurdles, steps and shooting tennis balls along the way; and, of course, a petting zoo.

Head to the arena Saturday night for a free with fair admission (but first come, first serve) Rough Stock Rodeo at 6 p.m. Enjoy bull riding, barrel racing and saddle bronc riding. Also in the arena will be Mexican dancing horses.

Live bands will entertain on the main stage at the fair, including Night Ranger at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Diamond Rio at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. All concert tickets are free with fair admission.

July 6 is Honor Day, which is dedicated to visitors 62 years and older as well as veterans and military service members. Seniors, veterans and military service members enjoy free admission all day. Family members of veterans and service members are free from 3 to 6:30 p.m. A special tribute to veterans will take place at 5 p.m. on the main stage. There will be police and military demos throughout the day as well.

July 7 is Awesome Day, in which the first 3,000 fairgoers wearing an Awesome 3000 t-shirt will get in free. Teens (12-19) are just $5 all day. Popular attractions on this day are the inflatables and carnival rides, fun activities to win prizes, plus live music on the main stage — there will be entertainment for the whole family!

Agricultural Day, which is Saturday, is all about livestock, 4-H, FFA and plenty of activity in the livestock barns, including animal viewing and contests — there is an animal to see for everyone. The livestock auction occurs on Ag Day and is a favorite of 4H/FFA members, their families and the local community.

Sunday is Family Fun Day. Kids 12 and under are free all day. Meet superheroes and Star Wars characters.
