Mateson saluted as top firefighter
Woodburn Fire District Scott Mateson was named the Firefighter of the Year on Saturday, Feb. 15, when the district held its annual Firefighter Awards Banquet at the Metropolis.
Mateson, who is an engineer with the district, was one of nearly two dozen honored on the evening as WSD paid tribute to contributions made at multiple levels.
Among those recognized were Silver Medal of Honor recipients Lt. Jeremy Peil, engineers Joe Jacobucci and Raul Garza, former WFD firefighters Miranda Carroll, Tod Woodward and Derek Dmochowsky, former Chief Paul Iverson and former Capt. Jay Hannon.
Other awards included Volunteer of the Year Hannah Johnson, Rookie of the Year Troy Jordan, the Chief's Award for community service to Mark Van Lieu and engineers Garza, Dan Agee and Robb Gramzow received Unit Commendation.
Letters of Appreciation were issued to several: engineer Jesse Halpern for implementation of the paramedics program; engineer Jacobucci and Alex Weninger for implementation of the peer support program; James Audritsh for organization of the WFD Food Drive and community support; Uli Reich for Open House, Bike Rodeo and CERT program coordination.
Weninger, Van Lieu and Emily Kirk all received Years of Service Pins.
"I look forward to this event every year," WFD Chief Joe Budge said. "It is a great time to reflect on the accomplishments of our firefighters and renew our commitment to provide the best service possible to the Woodburn and Gervais communities."
