The city of Woodburn announced that online retail giant Amazon purchased 130 acres in the city's enterprise zone on Thursday, June 24.

The land is in west Woodburn, near the WinCo Foods Distribution Center. Amazon has submitted preliminary documents announcing plans to construct a 3.8 million-square-foot fulfillment center on 90 acres of the land. Woodburn spokesman Tommy Moore said the city anticipates a completed application for that plan in the coming weeks.

The center is envisioned to open in the spring of 2023, and the project will entail significant transportation improvements to the area, including adding capacity to the southbound I-5 ramp.

"(Details) likely to be requested will be considered by the Planning Commission at a yet to be scheduled public hearing," Moore said.

The center is expected to provide upwards of 1,250 jobs, mostly full-time, with an average wage of $17 per hour and benefits.
