IndyCar has released its 2019 schedule, declaring its plan to return to Portland on Labor Day Weekend. The IndyCar race will take place on Sunday, Sept. 1 at Portland International Raceway. The 2019 race will be the second of three events specified in IndyCar's contract with the City of Portland.
The Portland race will be the second-to-last race on the IndyCar championship calendar. The final race of the 2019 season will take place three weeks later on September 22 at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. The calendar also includes new races for IndyCar at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The 2019 schedule features races on seven permanent road courses including PIR, five temporary street circuits, and five ovals.
Attendance at last weekend's Grand Prix of Portland was estimated at 40,000 fans on Sunday alone, making it the best-attended racing event of the past several decades.
"We were very excited about the crowd that was here Friday and Saturday as well," said Jerry Jensen, Vice President and General Manager of Grand Prix of Portland. "The fans were so enthusiastic about the race being back here. I kept hearing from the IndyCar drivers that fans were thanking them for coming back."
Plans are already underway to build on the success of this year's event.
"We're excited for more, and we'll have more activities," Jensen said. "We're off to a great start and we'll keep moving forward."
