The plug-in Fusion is a mileage champ that goes 25 miles on electricity alone, and then getsd 42 MPG in hybrid mode

There's been a lot of speculation about Ford's future with passenger cars. The company has confirmed that most of its passenger cars are scheduled to go out of production, but it hasn't specified exactly when that will happen. For the moment, you can still buy the Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid.

The Fusion Energi is a compelling midsize sedan. First, you can drive up to 25 miles entirely on electric power, which covers the majority of Portland-area commutes. Then the Fusion Energi kicks over to its 2.0-liter gas engine and runs like a regular hybrid. The Fusion Energi averages 42 miles per gallon running on the gas engine alone. You can recharge the Fusion Energi at most public charging stations, or at home on 120-volt wall power or a 240-volt home charging system.

Another reason to seriously consider the Fusion Energi is the Co-Pilot 360 suite of advanced safety and assistance features is standard equipment on all 2019 Fusion models. This package includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot information, lane keeping assistance, a backup camera and automatic high beams.

The Fusion Energi is available only in Ford's top Titanium trim. You'll get seating for five adults, comfortable front seats, and a cabin that is sensible and well planned. The Fusion Energi features high-quality leather seating surfaces with heating and ventilation in the front seats.

The tech package on the Fusion Energi includes an 8-inch touchscreen running Ford's SYNC operating system. As a top trim model, the Fusion Energi includes a driver assistance package. This feature suite includes adaptive cruise control, which maintains the prevailing speed on the highway. The Fusion Energi also includes voice-activated GPS navigation and real-time traffic information by satellite radio.

Reduced trunk space is the only real tradeoff for the plug-in hybrid system. The standard Fusion comes with 16 cubic feet of trunk space, which is good for a mid-size sedan. The Fusion Energi has only 8.2 cubic feet in the trunk because of the battery pack.

On the road, the Fusion Energi makes good use of its 188 combined system horsepower. There seems to be more vibration than usual when the gas engine is running, but it's possible that's just the contrast with the absolutely smooth sensation of all-electric operation. In every other way, the Fusion Energi is a standard mid-size sedan.

Buying the 2019 Fusion Energi is a little complicated. With its 9 kWh battery, the Fusion Energi is eligible for $1,500 in Oregon tax credits, and $4,609 in Federal tax credits. Ford is also offering $2,000 in factory incentives on this vehicle. However, these discounts could be substantially negated by the announced tariffs on products imported from Mexico. Ford makes the Fusion Energi in Hermosillo, Mexico, so the vehicle will be subject to a surcharge of $1,729 to $8,648 depending on the prevailing tariff rate.
