If you've been thinking about a new F-150, you really should take a look at the PowerStroke engine for towing capacity and mileage.

Last year, Ford introduced a new 3.0-liter PowerStroke diesel engine to the F-150 full size pickup truck line, and it's been a huge success. Truck buyers love diesels for their towing capacity and fuel economy, so bringing the benefits of a clean diesel to the F-150 was a natural step.

The PowerStroke engine delivers 440 pound-feet of torque, and uses a diesel exhaust fluid system to meet emissions standards. Fuel economy is impressive with up to 25 MPG on the highway, 20 in city driving, and an average of 22 MPG.

One of the reasons this turbo-diesel works so well in the F-150 is Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission. The transmission has enough gears to keep the comparatively small 3.0-liter engine in its power band. To prove the performance the F-150 with the PowerStroke diesel will tow up to 11,400 pounds, and carry up to 1,940 pounds payload. One last word about towing — the F-150 blind spot monitoring system now covers the trailer as well as the truck.

Inside, the test F-150 came with the mid-grade Lariat trim. These days, even a middle trim F-150 comes with heated and ventilated leather seats, heated leather steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The drive pedals are adjustable, so just about anyone can drive the F-150 in comfort. The driver's seat is 10-way adjustable with power lumbar support. This F-150 also had automatic swing-out running boards to make getting into the cab a little easier.

Ford gives the F-150 Lariat trim an 8.0-inch touchscreen running the SYNC 3 operating system. SYNC implements one of the best voice-activation systems in the business. The test truck also came with onboard navigation and a 360-degree surround view camera system. Ford now offers FordPass Connect to give the F-150 its own 4G/LTE wireless data plan with the ability to generate a wifi hot spot in the truck. That's great if your truck is also your business office.

On the road, this is really one of the best F-150s Ford has ever made. The PowerStroke diesel is almost silent. With the FX4 off-road package, the truck had a firm, smooth ride with comparatively little road noise of any kind. The truck is quite maneuverable around parking lots, and the available 360-degree camera is an option you should choose. Once you've had it, you won't want to be without it.

If you've been thinking about a new F-150, you really should take a look at the PowerStroke. Don't let the price on the test truck scare you. If you dispense with some things like the twin-panel moonroof and 20-inch wheels, you can configure a great PowerStroke diesel F-150 for around $50,000.
