When it comes to good old-fashioned muscle cars, no one beats Dodge. Sure, Chevrolet and Ford have some very fast coupes right now, but Dodge led the way back in 2014 with the Hellcat models of the Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, and Dodge continues to lead today.
The 2020 Charger Hellcat is impressive in many ways. Obviously with 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine, this car is fast. With its standard 8-speed automatic transmission, the Charger Hellcat will do 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, and it will run a quarter-mile drag race in less than 11 seconds. Its top speed of 196 MPH makes it the fastest production sedan in the world. Then it's got brakes, suspension and tires to match that performance. With the standard hood scoop and optional flat-black hood, the Charger Hellcat looks great, too.
The other really impressive thing about the Charger Hellcat is that you can drive it like a normal car. I drove the Hellcat for a week in December through heavy rains and occasionally frosty mornings. The Charger has breathtaking performance if you step on the gas, but it's measured so the car never surprises you. Dodge also did a great job with the suspension and steering, so the Hellcat is stable and confident at all times.
Inside, the Charger Hellcat is comfortable, with thick and supportive seats. The front seats may be ordered heated and ventilated for year-round comfort. As a full-size sedan, there's plenty of room for three passengers in the back seat. The Charger also offers a spacious 16.5 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. If that's not enough room, the rear seats fold down so you can fit longer items into the car as well.
Dodge has put its latest dashboard technology into the Charger, including an all-digital display for the driver. The Charger also comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and an available Harman Kardon audio system with 19 speakers. The Dodge Uconnect system works well, and offers all the hands-free features you need in a modern car.
The truth is that you really can use the Charger Hellcat as an ultimate hot rod and as your daily family car with no compromises, except perhaps at the fuel pump. All that engine power doesn't come for free, and the Hellcat's 12 MPG in the city is the price. On the highway, however, the Hellcat returns EPA-estimated 21 MPG, which is not far off other family sedans and SUVs. If you want the fastest production sedan in the world, you can get one for about the same price as a fancy SUV or pickup truck.
