A genuine practical family vehicle that gets great mileage and can be ordered in many trim levels

One of the biggest points in favor of Chrysler is the availability of a plug-in hybrid that can dramatically reduce your gas bill, but I also think the availability of several trims at affordable price points is also important.

Chrysler is currently offering "Family pricing for all," giving consumers their best insider discounts, plus an additional $2,000 national retail price incentive, making the Pacifica an even better deal. The Chrysler van family starts with the 2020 Chrysler Voyager model at $26,985. There are two Voyager trims under $30,000, and the base Pacifica with a gas engine starts at $31,100.

With current incentives, you can get into the most basic Pacifica Hybrid Touring trim level for as little as $38,100. If you want luxury, the base price of a 2020 Pacifica Hybrid Limited is $43,704 after incentives, and a Pacifica with all the options we tested is $47,170, including all incentives and fees.

The hybrid combines a 3.6-liter Atkinson-cycle V6 engine with a pair of electric motors. The system delivers 260 horsepower, which is plenty for the vehicle. The non-hybrid Pacifica and both Voyager trims use the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 at 287 horsepower.

The reason to buy the hybrid is simple. You will get an EPA-estimated all-electric range of up to about 30 miles before using a drop of gasoline. In real-world testing I was able to go about 36 miles before the gas engine kicked in. The Pacifica Hybrid has a 16 kWh battery, which means you can recharge from zero to full in about two hours using a 240-Volt level 2 charger, or about 14 hours using a standard 120-volt household outlet. In practical terms for most people, if you plug in the van when you get home for the evening, it will be charged when you wake up in the morning.

Offering 30 miles of range is key because that covers the vast majority of daily driving for most American families. Try keeping a diary of your daily mileage for a month, and see how many times you log more than 30 miles. If that's rare for you, you could effectively eliminate the gas station from your life, but still have the ability to take a long-distance road trip whenever you wanted. One last thing to mention: the hybrid system and the batteries are covered by a full warranty for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Inside, the Pacifica Hybrid offers a full technology and safety package, as well as innovations like third-row seats that fold down into the floor of the van. The center console between the front seats offers hidden storage, and the second-row captain's chairs are as comfortable as the front row.

Different trims offer a variety of features, but the top Limited trim offers all the luxury of a premium SUV at a competitive price. The Pacifica is also quiet on the road, confident in its ride, and easy to use. If you're thinking about a 7-passenger vehicle for your family, it's worth taking the time to check out the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.
