COURTESY NOKIAN - The Nokian One is designed specifically for the kind of weather we have in the Pacific Northwest. It makes sense that the winter tire was invented in Scandinavia, and Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian has been making winter tires since 1934. Recently, the company has branched out to all-season and all-weather tires that provide enhanced winter traction, but can be used on your vehicle year-round.

The latest tire from Nokian is called the Nokian One, and it's designed specifically for the kind of weather we have in the Pacific Northwest. It's not a winter snow and ice tire, but rather designed to handle heavy rain and occasional light snow or slush. Nokian designed the tread face with sipes, which are fine cuts into the rubber that help displace water and allow the tires to find grip when temperatures are at or near freezing. The tire compound also contains silica nodules, which help grip slippery surfaces.

One important feature of the Nokian One is the presence of Aramid/Kevlar fibers in the sidewall. This material provides extra toughness in the sidewall. This gives the new tire increased resistance to sidewall damage from running over potholes. In fact, Nokian is offering a free pothole protection warranty for any Nokian One tire that suffers catastrophic sidewall damage from a pothole in the first years of use. If the tire cannot be repaired, and is both less than one year since purchase and remaining tread is greater than 60%, the dealer will provide you with a replacement Nokian tire at no cost.

Another innovative feature in the Nokian One is a set of wear indicators that tell the driver how much tread is left on the tire. Visible notations are cast into the center tread block showing 100, 80, 60, 50, and 40 percent of treadwear remaining. The tire carries an 80,000-mile treadwear warranty.

Although Nokian is based in Finland, Nokian One tires for the North American market are made in Dayton, Tennessee. The tires are available in a wide variety of sizes for 14-inch to 20-inch wheels, covering about 91% of the passenger vehicle market. Nokian One tires are available for passenger cars, light trucks, and SUVs. The Nokian One is available through a number of local tire dealers carrying Nokian products.
