PGE offers electric vehicle incentives
Portland General Electric is encouraging more Oregonians to buy or lease an electric vehicle (EV) by launching a pilot program that provides up to a $500 rebate for residential customers to install a charger at home.
The program is open to customers who own or lease an EV. Income-eligible customers could qualify for up to a $1,000 rebate.
"Fueling electric vehicles at home is part of Oregon's clean energy future. We are excited to partner with our customers on this new residential charging pilot program to encourage electric vehicle adoption while at the same time helping to manage the grid during times of high demand. Cleaner, cheaper electric transportation is here today, and we look forward to working with more and more customers to show that EVs are for everyone," said Larry Bekkedahl, Vice President of Grid Architecture, Integration & System Operations at PGE.
The rebate is in addition to a federal 30% tax credit that was just renewed again through 2021. The two incentives can also be combined.
The new rebate pilot program also rewards customers who allow PGE to shift their EV home charger's energy use away from high demand times, when prices are high, or renewable resources are less available. This helps manage the grid and provides participants with a $25 reward at the end of each season.
The first 5,000 customers who sign up for the PGE Smart Charging Pilot Program will receive a rebate of up to $500 toward the purchase of a connected charger. In order to qualify, customers must:
• Be the residential account holder
Purchase and install a qualified EV charger
• Fill out the rebate application
• In an effort to make EV ownership more accessible to underserved communities, income-eligible customers may qualify for a rebate up to $1,000. To qualify for the income-eligible rebate, the customer's household must earn no more than 80% of the median income for their household size. Customers can reference the rebate income eligibility guidelines for more details.

"The Oregon Electric Vehicles Association has been promoting the adoption of EVs for over 25 years. The PGE Residential EV Charging program is a great step forward — it both helps balance the demand on the grid via smart charging and also makes home charging more accessible to EV owners with the rebate. A double win!" said Gary Exner, a PGE customer currently participating in the pilot program and President of the Oregon Electric Vehicles Association.
Kimberly Lakey from Carr Nissan, a local auto dealer talking to EV customers about the pilot program, said, "Nissan is a technology driven automaker that is committed to clean air solutions. Electric vehicles, such as the Nissan Leaf, are packed with technology. Society today is more committed to clean air technology, making the electric vehicle an important part of Nissan. PGE's EV programs are valuable to Carr Nissan and our customers by offering a simple and rebated solution to home charging, which is often addressed by our sales staff to our customers. PGE's program gives our sales staff a seamless segue into discussing home charging."
Greg Remensperger, Executive Vice President of the Oregon Auto Dealers Association (OADA), said, "The OADA appreciates and applauds the steps being taken by PGE to support electric vehicle sales at our auto dealers. PGE's dealer engagement and training program through Chargeway provides important tools and information to simplify EV charging for car shoppers, offering an improved buying experience for various brands. Our dealers are a key partner in the growth of electric vehicle sales in Oregon. PGE's new residential home charging program creates an important relationship between our dealership sales staff and the home charging experience that customers will enjoy with PGE. We look forward to supporting these programs and continuing Oregon's leadership in transportation electrification."
